Apparently, they still do. When it gets to the end of the year, everyone is trying to clean house and prepare for the New Year. People plan to drop old habits, ditch toxic relationships, get closer to God, start eating healthy, lose weight, make more money, learn a trade, meet the love of their life, get married, have kids, travel the world, and so on and so forth. On social media, there were all sorts of hashtags like #Leaveitin2017 and the like and a lot of people were so excited and forthcoming with information about issues and situations they would like to not go into the New Year with.
It’s 2018 (Yaaaayyy!! We made it!!) and New Year resolutions have been made by some. I used to make them too, but I stopped and here’s why. I realised that I don’t need to wait for the New Year if I want to effect a particular change in my life. If I want to lose weight for example, why wait till the New Year? Why can’t I start NOW? You want to wait till January 1st before you leave an abusive spouse or start a business, when you could just easily have started the process without waiting for your calendar to say, “January 1st”. And sadly too, most of those resolutions are abandoned even before January 31st so why take the pain of waiting for January 1st before you decide to make a big change in your life?
Well, that was how I decided to stop making New Year resolutions. As I go through life I have decided to take Nike’s (the brand, not the Yoruba name) advice and “JUST DO IT!”
